Inclement Weather Cuts Drake Relays Short for Redbirds

The Illinois State track and field team came home early from the Drake Relays after delays due to inclement weather. The competition continued after the delays but head coach Jeff Pigg made the decision to bring his team home to prevent any unnecessary injuries that could have resulted in the wind, rain, and a 36 degree wind chill. Pigg credited senior Alfie Gordillo for competing in the hammer throw despite the rain, wind and cold. Gordillo threw for a mark of 16904 that was good enough for 18th place. The womens 4x800 meter relay team of Jene Klostermann, Andrea Black, Leah Smith, and Lauren Ritt came in with a time of 9:14.24 and a 13th place finish. The girls did a really good job and they beat some Big Ten schools, said Pigg. They are making progress, which is good, but they still have a way to go. The mens distance medley relay team of Miklos Konkoly, Dan Schrock, Gabe Cruz, and Walter Ogola finished the race in 12th place with a time of 10:10.22. The events that Illinois State withdrew from were the mens and womens sprint medleys and the womens long jump. The complete results from the Drake Relays can be found at www.drakerelays.com. The Redbirds will be back in action May 4 to compete in the Iowa Twilight at the University of Iowa.
