Redbirds Sweep Track and Field Athlete of the Week Honors

Andrea Mosher, Latisha Johnson, Gergely Bata and Jeremy Doherty were all named Missouri Valley Conference Track and Field Athletes of the Week after their performances at the 2003 Alabama Relays last weekend in Tuscaloosa, Ala. Sprinter Andrea Mosher earned third place in the 400-meter hurdles in Alabama after posting a time of 1:00.74 in the event. The freshman from Ann Arbor, Mich., posted a season-best time in the event. Mosher also ran the final leg of the womens 4x400 relay, which finished fifth in the meet with a time of 3:50.81. Johnson broke the Redbird outdoor record in the shot put en route to posting an automatic NCAA Regional mark at the Alabama Relays. The junior from Jacksonville, Ill., posted a record-setting 48-10 in her throw and now holds the No.1 spot in ISUs outdoor record book, beating Jenny Folzs mark of 47-9 1/2 set in 1995. Johnson also earned first place in the event for her throw, beating out three Alabama throwers who finished second through fourth respectively. Freshman Jeremy Doherty set a personal-best mark in the 1500 meters at the Alabama Relays after capturing first place in the event with a time of 3:53.58, over a second faster then second-place finisher Michael Bond of Troy State (3:54.68). One of only three Redbirds to earn first place in the his/her respective event at the Alabama Relays, Dohertys win in the 1500 meters was the first of his career, indoor and outdoor. He also ran the third leg for the Redbird men in the 4x800 meter relay that finished first at the meet with a time of 7:38.30, over four seconds faster than second-place finisher Rend Lake (7:43.07). Gergely Bata recorded an NCAA Regional mark in the high jump at the Alabama Relays last weekend. Bata posted a personal and season-best height of 6-11.50 in the event, good for second-place honors. The 2002 MVC outdoor conference champion, who is just a sophomore, hit the mark better then third-places Todd Green (6-9.50). Along with Johnson and Bata, Pierre Woods of the mens team qualified for the NCAA Regional in the high jump also, posting a 6-9 1/2. The Redbirds return to the track and their outdoor season this Saturday at the Saluki Spring Classic in Carbondale, Ill.
