Klostermann, Goy and Shaffer Named to Verizon Academic All-District Team

Jen Klostermann, Christian Goy and John Shaffer of the Illinois State track and field teams were named to the 2003 Verizon Academic All-District V Mens and Womens Track/Cross Country Teams for their accomplishments during the 2002-03 academic year. Goy and Shaffer were first-team selections and will appear on the national ballot for Verizon Academic All-America honors while Klostermann was a second-team pick. Klostermann, an accounting/business education major with a 3.85 grade point average, is a native of Highland, Ill. She was an all-conference performer in the 800 meters during the past indoor track and field season, after placing second in the MVC Indoor Championships with a time of 2:11.67. She ran the event in the fastest time during the indoor season, 2:10.66 at the Iowa State Invite. Named Missouri Valley Conference Track Athlete of the Week for her performance at Iowa State, Klostermann was also a NCAA Regional Qualifier in the 800 meters for the indoor season. She placed fourth in the mile at the 2003 MVC Indoor Championships with a time of 4:56.99 and was a member of all-conference 4x400 relay team for indoor season. Active in the Missouri Valley Conferences Just Read Program, Klostermann has been a member of the AFNI Athletics Honor Roll every semester at Illinois State, eight of eight, including spring 2003. A three-time NCAA All-American, Goy finished his eligibility in cross country in the fall, placing first in the 2002 Missouri Valley Conference Cross Country Meet. The Rheinsburg, Germany native, was crowned NCAA champion in the indoor mile last year and totaled seven conference track titles in his athletic career. He was named Illinois State Student-Athlete of the Year in 2001 and graduated in May with a degree in management. Shaffer, a native of Hoopeston, Ill., ran the mile, 3000 meters and 5000 meters consistently in indoor season. The senior music education major finished seventh at the 2002 MVC Outdoor Championship in the 5000 meter run and was a member of the AFNI Athletics Honor Roll four of four semesters. This years team was voted on by a members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) from District V, which encompasses Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota and Wisconsin, as well as the Canadian provinces of Manitoba and Ontario. To qualify, student-athletes must hold at a least a sophomore status, a 3.2 minimum GPA and be a starter or key reserve on the team.
