Fresh of a regional qualifying mark in the hammer throw last Saturday, Illinois State senior Brian Krantz took home Missouri Valley Conference Field Athlete of the Week accolades Tuesday for his performance at Vanderbilt.
Krantz rebounded from an injury that kept him from competing in 2004, to qualify for the NCAA Regionals in the hammer throw after finishing first in the event (189-4) at the Vanderbilt Spring Classic. In addition to the first-place finish in the hammer, Krantz also placed first in the discus with a throw of 147-4.
Were expecting a lot of big things from Brian in the outdoor season, Illinois State track and field head coach Elvis Forde said. Ive always believed that Brian has the capabilities to do special things. Hopefully his early success will transcend into an outdoor championship in the conference, as well as a trip to nationals.
The Redbirds return to action this Saturday for the Saluki Spring Classic in Carbondale.
