Redbirds Advance

May 27, 2005

NORMAL, Ill. - After a tough day of competition at the NCAA Mideast Regional held at Indiana University, Andrea Mosher and the Redbird 4x100-meter relay team will compete in the finals of their respective events.

Mosher, who competed in the 400-meter hurdles, recorded a time of 58.99 placing her seventh in the event going into the finals during Saturday's competition. Mosher is looking to advance to the NCAA Championships in the event just as she did in 2003.

"Andrea advanced to the finals tomorrow after a poor start in the 400-meter hurdles, but she finished the race strong and were looking forward to her doing well tomorrow and getting back to the NCAA Championships," said head track and field coach Elvis Forde. "Andrea has been to the championships and she knows what it will take for her to qualify tomorrow."

Others advancing to the finals for Saturday's competition was the 4x100-meter relay team of Lian Lucas, Lyn Cox, Anna Lovell and Cherise Devers. The team clocked in at 44.89 placing them 6th in the event going into the final competition at 5 p.m. on Saturday.

Although the Redbirds qualified for finals in two events, several other Redbirds finished the season, as they did not make it past the preliminaries in their events. Bronco Meeks came close to qualifying in the 800-meter run but fell one place short. Meeks recorded a personal best in the event at 1:49.19, which places him third on the Redbird All-Time Best List.

"Bronco ran a personal best in the 800-meters but his time was just short of advancing to the finals," said Forde. "The 800-meters was a very tough event."

The shot put, an event the Redbird men have been very strong in all year, didn't go as well as expected as none of the Illinois State throwers made it to the finals in the event. Competing in the event for Illinois State were Rhett Hillard, Brian Krantz and Mark Jackson. However, Krantz will have a chance to redeem himself Saturday as he competes in the hammer throw.

"We didn't do very well in the throws today in regards to the shot put. We have done very well in that area all year but none of our men advanced to the finals," said Forde.

The Redbirds will still have several chances to qualify athletes for the NCAA Championships with Mosher and the 4x100-meter relay team in the finals. Lauren Maul will compete in the triple jump and Laura Kennedy will run the 3,000-meter steeplechase as well as the 4x400-meter relay team of Lucas, Devers, Lindsey Arnold and Mosher in the finals on Saturday.

"All of the athletes who competed today and didn't qualify for the finals all had a good year. We will continue tomorrow with Lauren in the triple jump and Laura Kennedy in the steeplechase," added Forde. "The 4x400-meter relay will also compete for a chance to advance to the championships."
