The Illinois State 4x400-meter relay team of Andrea Mosher, Kimberli Smudde, Anna Lovell and Lian Lucas secured a second-place team finish for the Redbird women's squad as they took first-place in the event in a new school record time of 3:43.70 at the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Indoor Championships.
The women's championship race came down to the 4x400-meter relay, but the `Birds first-place, record-setting performance moved Illinois State (80.5) into second-place behind league champions Wichita State (138.5). Northern Iowa and Missouri State tied for third with 77 points, while Southern Illinois (70), Indiana State (45), Drake (35) and Bradley (8) rounded out the final spots.
On the men's side, Northern Iowa (140) once again claimed the men's championship, while the Redbirds took fourth-place with 53 points. Indiana State (124) claimed second, while Southern Illinois was third with 88 points.
On her way to a first-place finish in the 60-meter dash, not only did Devon Williams provisionally qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships with a time of 7.43, but the conference champion's time in the 60-meters also broke the indoor school record that was last set in 1995. The Redbirds also claimed second-place in the same event as Lucas ran a season-best time of 7.56 to earn the silver. Topping her 60-meter performance, Lucas came back and won the 200-meter dash, besting the school record she set less than 24 hours ago. Her time of 24.00 also provisionally qualified her for the NCAA Indoor Championships.
Bronco Meeks also added conference champion to his list of achievements as he won the 800-meters in 1:50.69, which is a new season-best for him. TJ Fakehinde took second-place honors in the high jump with a season-best performance of 6-08.00, while Mark Jackson added another second-place finish on the weekend, with a heave of 55-07.75 in the shot put.
In 4:56.41, Betsy McDonald ran to a third-place finish in the mile, taking over three seconds off her previous best time this season. Brittney Hourd took fifth-place in the 60-meter hurdles in 8.85, while Anna Lovell ran a season-best, 56.84, in the 400-meters to earn a fourth-place finish. In the 800-meters, Smudde ran to a fifth-place finish in 2:14.94, while teammate Whitney Beals took sixth-place in 2:15.62.
In the field events, Megan Reese placed fifth in the high jump with a leap of 5-05.75.
Brian Glaza (4:19.85) and Jeremy Doherty (4:20.51) were able to combine for eight team points as the duo took third and fifth- place respectively in the mile. Jeremy Johnson also recorded a fifth-place finish in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.02. The men's 4x400-meter relay team of DeAndre Tillman, Johnson, Max Mkwezalamba and Meeks placed fourth in a season-best time of 3:18.55.
