Competing in the qualifying rounds of the Hoosier Relays in Bloomington, Ind., the Illinois State track and field squad advanced several athletes to the finals of their respective events.
Head coach Elvis Forde thought his team competed exceptionally well and feels this two-day meet will be a good test in regards to the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference championships in three weeks.
"I thought we did a wonderful job," said Forde. "This meet is a good way for us to prepare for the conference championships. It gives us a chance to compete the night before the finals and have to comeback and compete on day two."
Jeremy Doherty, who was invited to run in the invitation mile took second in the event with a personal best time of 4:06.37. Doherty bested his previous time by nearly seven seconds. Jeremy Johnson came through in two qualifying rounds in the 60-meter dash, securing a spot in the finals tomorrow. Geoff Houtman ran a 1:54.64 in the 800-meters, the second fastest time in the event, also qualifying for finals. Mike Richardson recorded the fifth fastest time in the mile at 4:21.25 and will compete for a top spot in the event during the finals tomorrow.
Mark Jackson will compete in the final round of the shot put as he recorded a 53-03.75 with the eighth farthest distance, while also advancing in the weight throw.
On the women's side, Devon Williams and Lian Lucas each qualified for the finals in the 60-meter and 200-meter dashes. Megan Reese competed in the finals of the high jump, winning the event with a personal best jump of 5-08.00. Competing in the 800-meters, Andrea Mosher turned in a 2:16.74 advancing to the finals.
In the pole vault Kristen Brinkman took second in the event with a jump of 11-05.75, nearly a foot higher than her previous personal best. Other second-day qualifiers include Kimberli Smudde in the 600-meters and Brittney Hourd in the long jump.
The Redbirds will resume competition on Saturday with running events beginning at 11:50 a.m. and field events getting underway at noon.
