NORMAL, Ill. -
Competing in the hammer throw on the first day of the competition at the Saluki Spring Classic in Carbondale, Ill., the Illinois State track and field team was led by senior Brian Krantz.
Krantz took fourth-place in the hammer throw with a toss of 177-04. Teammate Mark Jackson turned in a sixth-place finish recording a throw of 172-01. The duo's efforts earned the first Illinois State points of the meet.
Team wise, Southern Illinois' men's team currently holds the top spot with 20 team points, followed by Indiana State (10) and the `Birds (8).
On the women's side, freshman Samantha Springer placed 11th with 151-06, while Taylor Carbaugh was 22nd.
Southern Illinois also leads the women's competition with 22 team points followed by Marquette and Northern Illinois with six points.
Head track and field coach Elvis Forde wasn't overly impressed with his squad's performance today, but looks forward to tomorrow's competition.
"Brian and Samantha had a pretty good day," said Forde. "Samantha is coming along quite well, but we're going to keep working. Hopefully the weather will cooperate for tomorrow and we do what we need to do to be competitive.
