Lucas Does it Again, This Time Hits Regional Mark in 200-Meters

NORMAL, Ill. - As if yesterday's performance in the 100-meters wasn't good enough for Lian Lucas at the Sea Ray Relays in Knoxville, Tenn., the senior sprinter once again added her name to the NCAA regional qualifying list, this time in the 200-meters.

Lucas turned in a time of 23.88 to place 14th in the event and is the only Redbird to qualify for the NCAA Mideast Regional in three events. Yesterday Lucas qualified in the 100-meters and at the Missouri Relays on April 1, she teamed up with Devon Williams, Anna Lovell and Cherise Devers in the 4x100-meter relay, which ran a regional qualifying time of 45.55.

In other events at the Sea Ray Relays, Laura Kennedy took fourth-place in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 10:45.06. Although, she once again bested the regional standard, Kennedy qualified earlier in the season at the Saluki Spring Classic in 10:38.21. The 4x400-meter relay recorded a season-best time of 3:44.20 for 12th place this weekend at the Sea Ray Relays.

On the men's side, Derek Sargent was third in the javelin with a throw of 196-01, while Brian Krantz (171-04) was 16th in the hammer throw and Mark Jackson (167-01) was 21st.

With most of the team competing at the Lee Calhoun Memorial Invitational at Western Illinois, DeAndre Tillman turned in an impressive time in the 400-meter with a season-best 48.34 for first-place. Maxwell Mkwezalamba followed Tillman with a second-place finish in 49.13. Luke Heinrichs also added a season-best in the 100-meter in 11.05 earning him third-place. Olutola Fakehinde won the high jump with a season-best jump of 6-08.75, while Darren Price won the javelin. Brian Glaza tested his skills in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and turned in a third-place finish in 10:46.73.

Field event competitors Bryan Chancellor and Joe Painter each placed fourth respectively in the hammer throw and shot put.

The women's squad turned in a number of first-place finishes including Whitney Beals (2:15.69) in the 800-meters, Suzy Turner (4:44.31) in the 1,500 and Brittney Hourd in the long jump (18-09.75) and the 100-meter hurdles (14.31). Yesterday Hourd finished the heptathlon in first-place, while qualifying for the NCAA Mideast Regional. Kathleen Thompson finished second in the 1,500-meters, while Melissa Clarke was third in the 100 and 200-meter dashes.

Samantha Springer placed second in the discus and sixth in the hammer throw, while Taylor Carbaugh was third in the shot put. Frannie Epps came back to compete in the open events, after a fourth-place finish in the heptathlon taking second in the javelin and third in the 100-meter hurdles in 15.12.

Next weekend the Redbirds will compete in the Illinois Invite in Champaign, Ill., on Saturday, April 22 in their second to last meet before the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Outdoor Championships on May 12-14.
