ST. LOUIS - The Illinois State football team placed two student-athletes on the 2008 Missouri Valley Football Conference All-Academic Team Tuesday, as junior wide receiver Warren McCarty earned first-team honors, and senior center Jonathan St-Pierre received honorable mention recognition.
McCarty, who earned second-team academic honors in 2007, played in five games after missing the first part of the season due to injury. He caught his first collegiate pass at South Dakota State and it resulted in a 70-yard touchdown. McCarty finished the season with three catches for 91 yards and a touchdown. He carries a 4.00 grade-point average (GPA), while majoring in business administration. He has been named to the AFNI Athletics Honor Roll six times.
St-Pierre started all 11 games at center for the ISU offense, which averaged 369.4 yards of total offense per game and 197.2 rushing yards per game. He didn't allow a quarterback sack all season and posted a team-best 108 knockdowns. St-Pierre earned honorable mention academic honors last season from the league office, and he has already earned bachelor's degrees in economics and business administration and is currently working on a master's degree in economics. He finished his undergraduate work with a 3.03 GPA.
The two Redbirds were among 39 student-athletes recognized by the conference office.
Nominees must be starters or important reserves with at least a 3.00 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale. Student-athletes must have reached sophomore academic and athletic standing at their institutions (freshmen are not eligible) and must have completed at least one full academic year at their institution.
League sports information directors voted on the team by designating 11 players for first-team honors and 11 players for second-team honors.
