NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State men's and women's track and field teams host their final indoor track and field meet with the running of the Redbird Invitational inside Horton Field House Saturday. The meet is slated to begin with the field events. The men's weight throw and women's shot put and long jump at begin at 9 a.m., and the women's 5,000-meter run will begin the events on the track at 9:15 a.m.
Live results will be made available online after the completion of each event by going to the official Illinois State Athletics Web page, GoRedbirds.com
The Redbirds host Ohio Valley Conference members Southern Illinois-Edwardsville and Southeast Missouri State as well as UIC from the Horizon League. The meet is an individual competition and no team scores will be computed.
"The competition should give our kids just enough to get in a little competition and get ready for the season as we continue on," said Illinois State head track and field coach Elvis Forde.
After finishing second to Missouri Valley Conference foe Indiana State last weekend at the Terre Haute Double Dual the Redbirds are ready to get back into action.
"I am ready to see if we have the rust knocked off, especially in the field events and sprints," said Forde. Most of my concern after last weekend was in those areas. It is more difficult for those individuals to come back from the winter break just as prepared as they had left. They just do not have the resources at home to continue training, even at half the level they were training at when they left here.
"I think that if we can display excitement about the beginning of the track and field season it will be a plus and help us move in the right direction."
