NORMAL, Ill. - Former Illinois State linebacker Kye Stewart has signed a professional contract to play for the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League (CFL). Stewart is the 16th Illinois State player in program history to play in the CFL.
Stewart finished his Illinois State football career as the Redbirds' 10th Sports Network All-America First-Team selection following his senior season in 2007. The Nashville, Tenn., native was a two-time All-Missouri Valley Football Conference honoree at the linebacker position and also was a 2007 Walter Camp Football Foundation and College Sporting News All-American.
Stewart ranks in the top-10 all-time at Illinois State for total career tackles (7th - 380), career assisted tackles (6th - 200) and career unassisted tackles (9th - 180). He led the Valley Football Conference in 2007 with 131 total tackles (11.9 per game) and 23 tackles-for-loss.
Stewart joins Kevin Glenn (Winnipeg), Sam Young (Winnipeg) and Cameron Siskowic (Hamilton) as former Illinois State football players currently on a CFL roster. ISU senior center Jonathan St-Pierre was drafted as a junior by Saskatchewan in April 2008.
