Illinois State freshman Steve Regan continued his undefeated streak winning the mile at the Wisconsin Elite Track and Field Invitational with a time of 4 minutes, 16.53 seconds inside the Camp Randall Memorial Sports Center in Madison, Wis., Saturday. The Monticello, Ill., native has not lost in any individual event this season.
"For a freshman in his first collegiate race in the mile to get out there and run a very controlled race was impressive," said Illinois State head track and field coach Elvis Forde.
On the track Sophomore Meaka Brents won the 60-meter dash with a season-best time of 7.74 just edging out sophomore Tia Harvey who took the runner-up position with a time of 7.74. Then in the 200-meter dash Harvey (25.73) edged out Brents (25.96) as the duo both clocked season-best finishes and took second and third place, respectively.
Alia McAfee clocked in with a personal-best finish in the 400-meter dash crossing the finish line in 57.33 for a second-place finish, McAfee also took fourth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.03.
In the final track event of the evening, the men's distance medley relay of Kevin Forde, Dan Murphy, Matt Mroczynski and John Neisler clocked in with a fourth-place finish crossing the finish line with a time of 10:31.07.
In the field events, four Redbirds claimed top-honors with freshman Alex Adams winning his first collegiate event in the shot put throwing a distance of 51-05 and freshman Tori Ziegler winning her third-straight women's shot put title launching a distance of 46-06.25 .
Junior Jason Robbs added to the tally winning the weight throw with a distance of 57-06.25. Drew Holl rounded out the Redbirds top honors in the field events clearing a height of 6-09 in the high jump.
"This was a good meet for us," said Forde. "Overall the team is looking much better but we still have a lot of work to do. We need to continue to make improvements throughout the season."
The Redbirds head to the Rod McCravy Invitational held in Lexington, Ky., next weekend Feb. 6-7.
