LEXINGTON, Ky. -
Senior Samantha Springer threw a personal-best 56 feet, 9.5 inches to finish seventh in the women's weight throw, highlighting the Illinois State track and field teams performances at the Rod McCravy Memorial Invitational held inside the Nutter Field House in Lexington, Ky., Friday evening. The Tremont, Ill., native also took fourth in the discus throw with a toss of 150-06.
Illinois State assistant coach for throws Jeff Chakouian felt Springer's performance was her best effort competing indoors.
"Coming in today she was in the second of three flights, so she knew she had to beat everyone in order to get into the finals," said Chakouian. "She had about three throws over 56 feet and really showed a good effort. We are looking to get two or three more feet before conference time, but she really came out to compete today and was focused and ready."
Junior Jason Robbs launched a season-best 58-0.5 in the men's weight throw earning a seventh-place finish in a field of 30 competitors.
Senior Kristin Brinkman cleared a height of 10-8 in the pole vault to place 15th, while sophomores Amanda Albrecht (36-07.75) and Lita Wynne (36-5.75) placed 13th and 15th, respectively in the triple jump.
Sophomore Drew Holl cleared a height of 6-4.25 to take sixth in the high jump and teammate Chris Kritz finished 10th clearing a height of 6-2.25.
The Redbirds begin day two of competition at the Rod McCravy Memorial Invitational tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. with the women's high jump. Live results are available by visiting GoRedbirds.com.
