NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State head football coach Brock Spack added some depth to the Redbird kicking game, as he announced kicker/punter Mike Wood will continue his education and football career at ISU.
"We have known Mike for a long time, and he had a great state championship game," said Spack. "He's an athlete. He was both a receiver and kicker in high school. We really wanted a guy who could do both punting and kickoffs, and was an athlete. He's a great student and comes from a great program."
Wood played an instrumental role in the 2008 Indiana High School Class 5A Championship Game with a pair of successful onside kicks and a touchdown catch, as Wood and Center Grove High School scored three touchdowns in the final six minutes to defeat Carmel, 36-33, for the state title.
The 6-foot-4, 210-pound all-state and all-conference selection was 92-for-93 on extra point tries last season and set the school record for the most PATs. Wood was 4-for-6 on field goals in 2008, including a long of 48 yards, and averaged 37.6 yards per punt with a long of 57 yards. He also collected 10 passes and three touchdowns as a receiver.
