NORMAL, Ill. -
Illinois State track and field junior Scott Krapf was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America men's track and field/cross country teams, as voted on by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Thursday. Krapf was a third-team selection in the university division.
Krapf is the 40th Academic All-American in Illinois State history, the first since softball player Kate Stake in 2005. Krapf was eligible for the award after being named to ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District V First Team, as announced earlier this month.
Illinois State head track and field coach Elvis Forde feels Krapf is deserving of the award based on his academic and athletic performances.
"Scott has always been a very diligent young man," said Forde. "Scott is involved in almost everything on campus. It amazes all of us how he is able to still maintain a 4.0 grade-point-average and excels in the classroom, along with the athletic world. He is involved in several organizations and volunteer groups on campus. He has a good feel on what he wants to accomplish at Illinois State, and he knows exactly what he wants in the future. He has mapped his career very well here."
Krapf competed in five meets for the Redbirds and was the top-finisher on two occasions during the cross country season. He finished the cross country season with the fastest 10K time for Illinois State and the Missouri Valley Conference with a 32:09.20 and placed 27th at the NCAA Midwest Regional Championship.
The Danville, Ill., native was also named to the 2008 All-MVC Cross Country and All-Academic teams. Krapf placed seventh with a time of 24:54.22 in the 8K championship race at the 2008 State Farm MVC meet. Krapf also had success during the indoor track season, where he finished second in the 3,000-meter run and third in the 5,000-meter run at the State Farm MVC Indoor Championships to earn All-MVC honors in both events.
Krapf was also the Valley's Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) representative for the NCAA, while serving as the SAAC President at Illinois State.
Krapf earned his degree from ISU in recreation and park administration with a perfect 4.0 GPA in May. He will use his last year of eligibility during the 2009-10 season, while pursuing his master's degree in sport management.
"He continues to achieve success in all aspects of his life on campus and athletically," said Forde. "We hope he can stay healthy this year and help us from an athletic standpoint as well."
