Russell Added To Redbird Football Roster

NORMAL, Ill. - Just before fall practice was set to officially begin, Illinois State football head coach Brock Spack continued to bolster the depth of his team with the addition of freshman offensive lineman Andrew Russell Tuesday.

Russell, a 6-foot-3, 325 pound center, was added to the roster after initially committing to Louisiana-Monroe. The Richardson, Texas, native could have an immediate impact on the offensive line and Spack is pleased to have him aboard.

"Andrew gives us a big, physical body on the interior of our offensive line," Spack said. "With his addition, we will be able to move some people around and secure our depth at several positions. His addition will not only help us on offense, but also on defense as well."

During his prep career at Richardson High School, Russell was a four-year letterwinner for head coach Brent Whitson. During his senior year, he was a first-team all-district and all-city selection and was later ranked as the No. 27 best center in the nation by Scout.com. As a junior, Russell earned second-team all-district and all-city honors after being named the team's defensive most valuable player as a freshman and sophomore.

Illinois State begins fall camp Tuesday at 7 p.m., at Hancock Stadium in preparation for the season-opener September 3 at Eastern Illinois.
