Illinois State senior distance runner Scott Krapf was appointed vice chair of the Division I National Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) during the recently completed NCAA Convention in Atlanta, Ga. Krapf will serve as vice chair this year and will become chair in 2011.
"I am certainly appreciative that the members of the Division I National SAAC have put their trust in me to serve as vice chair and chair the next two years," said Krapf. "It is an exciting time to be a Division I student-athlete and I look forward to continuing the great success of the National SAAC."
The Division I National SAAC consists of one student-athlete from each of the 31 Division one conferences. Current SAAC members select from three candidates from each conference, who then serve a two-year term. The Division I SAAC reports directly to the NCAA Division I Leadership and Legislative Councils.
As vice chair, Krapf will serve as a non-voting member of the NCAA Legislative Council, offering input and assistance in shaping the legislation by which NCAA institutions are governed.
"There are going to be a number of important issues and discussions that the student-athlete voice will be pivotal in shaping. These include commercialism, financial aid and technology, among others," Krapf said. "The National SAAC has positioned itself in the governance structure to be included on a number of these discussions. It will be my responsibility, along with the chair, Nick Fulton from Wisconsin, to work together to ensure that the student-athlete voice is put at the forefront of these discussions."
Krapf, a seven-time All-MVC honoree in track and cross country, has served as the Illinois State SAAC President and Missouri Valley Conference SAAC representative since 2007. He became an NCAA Division I SAAC representative in 2008 and was appointed a representative on the NCAA joint SAAC and the Olympic Sports Liason Committee SAAC this year.
Krapf graduated summa cum laude in May 2009 with a degree in recreation and park administration in just three years. He is currently pursuing his master's degree in sport management.
"I look forward to tackling the issues that the National SAAC will face in the future," Krapf continued. "It really is the committee members who make the National SAAC so successful. I will stand firm in expressing the thoughts and sentiments of all 160,000 Division I student-athletes from our conferences and institutions over the course of the next two years."
