Smith Takes Seventh at World Junior Championships

MONCTON, Canada - Illinois State thrower Brittany Smith's memorable season has come to an end, but not before she finished seventh in the shot put competition at the 13th IAAF World Junior Championships with a throw of 50'09.25" Tuesday night. Smith represented her school and country as a member of Team USA at the championships, which was held at Stade Moncton 2010 Stadium in Moncton, Canada.

The Oak Park, Ill., native recorded a throw of 51'11.75" in the qualifying round Tuesday morning, which put her in fourth place heading into the final round. In order to reach the finals, competitors have to record a throw of at least 51'06.25" or at least the top-12 performers advance.

Smith qualified for the world junior championships, after she placed first in the shot put with a throw of 50'06.75" at the 2010 USA Junior Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa. A total of 82 athletes represent the U.S. at the World Junior Championships.

Brazil's Geisa Arcanjo won the gold medal with a toss of 55'10.25". Qianqian Meng from China took the silver medal with a throw of 55'07.00", while her teammate Shuang Cui earned the bronze medal with a score of 52'11.00".
