Football 101: A Crash Course for Women

NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State head football coach Brock Spack and Radio Bloomington personalities will host "Football 101: A Crash Course for Women," a ladies-only football clinic, at the Kaufman Football Building Saturday, Aug. 21, from 2:30-4:30 p.m., as part of the Redbird Fan Fair festivities.

The Football 101 clinic is completely free, but space is limited, so only the first 125 women to enroll will be admitted. To learn more about the game of football, register for this free clinic by calling Pam Merna at the Kaufman Football Building at (309) 438-8671. The first 100 women to register will receive a complimentary souvenir T-shirt.

"We are trying to give the ladies an idea of what the game of football is all about," Spack said. "Our hope is to give them enough information to give the game some purpose when they are in the stands or at home watching on TV. Football is not just about a bunch of guys in pads running around like chickens with their heads cut off. It's a very organized, structured and disciplined game and when you break it down, it can be very simple and easy to understand.

"With their new knowledge learned, I think they will feel more comfortable talking about the game to their husbands, boyfriends, sons or family members and have a better understanding of how the game works. The end of the day will be great with the tailgate, which is pure college football, and I think it will be a fun day for everyone involved."

While the lady of the house is attending the Football 101 clinic, the rest of the family can get a free sneak preview of the Redbird volleyball team which will begin its fall scrimmage at 3 p.m. in Redbird Arena. Following the completion of the clinic, Moe's will sponsor a pregame tailgate for all the participants in the Ropp Lot north of Hancock Stadium.

The Redbird Fan Fair, another free event, will take place from 5-7 p.m., at "The Plaza," located between Redbird Arena and Horton Field House. Student-athletes and coaches from Illinois State's 19 varsity sports teams will be on hand at the event, assisting in the various fair games. They will interact with the fans, and will be signing autographs on a limited basis. Food, games and climbing wall by Upper Limits will be provided.

Additional activities include free face painting by The Zoo Lady, inflatable games provided by Fun on the Run, Illinois State merchandise sold by the Alamo II and a live remote by WJBC-AM 1230.

Following Redbird Fan Fair, participants of the Football 101 clinic will be able to put their new found knowledge into practice, as the Illinois State football team engages in a free public scrimmage inside Hancock Stadium at 7 p.m.
