NORMAL, Ill. - After a pair of non-conference games to start the season, the Illinois State football team will hit the road this Saturday to start Missouri Valley Football Conference play at No. 20 South Dakota State. ISU head coach Brock Spack will preview that matchup and offer his thoughts on last weekend's loss at Northwestern at his weekly press luncheon Tuesday at noon at the Kaufman Football Building.
The Redbirds and the Jackrabbits both head into the contest off defeats last weekend. ISU traveled north to face in-state foe Northwestern in a matchup of FCS and FBS schools at a soggy Ryan Field. The Wildcats took advantage of several Redbird turnovers to pick up a 37-3 win and drop ISU to 1-1 on the season.
The Jackrabbits did not play during the opening week of competition, but instead opened their 2010 season last weekend against No. 16-ranked Delaware. The Blue Hens rolled up 400 yards of total offense and held South Dakota State without a touchdown, posting a 26-3 victory in a matchup between nationally ranked teams.
Coach Spack will be joined at the weekly luncheon by junior offensive lineman Cal McCarthy and senior kicker/punter Steven Fetzer. McCarthy has been the Redbirds' most consistent lineman through the first two weeks of play, grading out the highest among all lineman after both contest while helping the team to a top-25 ranking in the nation in the passing offense category. Fetzer has done it all for the Redbirds, going 3-for-3 in field goal attempts through three games while averaging 39.5 yards per punt in his first action as a punter in his Redbird career.
The live video can be seen on Redbird All-Access, the Illinois State Athletics Department's exclusive multimedia platform. The video will also be archived following the completion of the press conference and can then be viewed on demand.
