Fetzer Named College Sporting News All-Star

CHICAGO - Illinois State senior kicker Steven Fetzer continues to accumulate awards this week, as he was named one of five College Sporting News All-Stars for the fourth week of NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision play.

Fetzer was named the Missouri Valley Football Conference Special Teams Player of the Week, after he kicked the game-winning field goal in double overtime to give No. 25 ranked Illinois State a thrilling 44-41 win over Missouri Valley Football Conference foe Missouri State Saturday night at Hancock Stadium.

Fetzer connected from 39 yards in the second overtime period to give the Redbirds the victory over the Bears. Kicking into a steady rain all night, Fetzer also boomed a career-long 51-yard field goal in the second quarter among his three field goals on five attempts for the night. Only five field goals have been longer than Fetzer's 51-yarder this season in FCS.

The Mahomet, Ill., also hit 3-of-4 extra points for a total of 12 points and averaged 37.8 yards per punt in four tries, with one pinned at the MSU two-yard line.

Running back Preston Brown of Tennessee State, North Dakota State running back D.J. McNorton, Southeastern Louisiana linebacker Mark Newbill and New Hampshire quarterback R.J. Toman were the week's other CSN honorees. College Sporting News is a national news service that specializes in the coverage of the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision. CSN delivers an unprecedented blend of columns and new stories, the only preseason FCS magazine, administrates the Gridiron Power Index (GPI) which is used by the NCAA for postseason selection purposes, as well as providing links to FCS content around the Internet.

The No. 19 ranked Redbirds return to action Saturday, Oct. 2, at home against in-state rival and No. 23 ranked Southern Illinois. Kickoff against the Salukis is scheduled for 1 p.m., at Hancock Stadium.
