NORMAL, Ill. - The 2010 Illinois State football season opener was memorable, to say the least, and head coach Brock Spack will recap the wild win against the Central Missouri and preview this week's game at Northwestern at his weekly press conference, Tuesday at noon, at the Kaufman Football Building.
Both the Redbirds and the Wildcats head into this week's game with 1-0 records in 2010. ISU amassed 509 yards of total offense and racked up 187 yards rushing in a wild 55-54 win over the Mules at Hancock Stadium, in a game that was delayed nearly two hours due to storms in the area. Northwestern won its fifth-consecutive season opener under head coach Pat Fitzgerald, and its sixth-straight opener overall with a 23-12 win last Saturday at Vanderbilt. The Wildcats were led by the strong play of quarterback Dan Persa, who threw for 222 yards and three touchdowns, against the Commodores.
Coach Spack will be joined at the weekly luncheon by junior linebacker Josh Howe and sophomore tailback Erik Smith. Howe had a strong game against the Mules Thursday night, as he recorded eight tackles, tallied 1.5 tackles-for-loss and added his first career interception in the victory for the Redbirds. Smith made his debut in a Redbird uniform and was very successful, as he rushed for 96 yards on 13 carries and also caught five passes for 47 out of the backfield.
