Brittany Smith continued to build on her strong sophomore season, as the Illinois State track and field teams completed the first day of competition at the Iowa State Classic in Ames, Iowa, at the Lied Recreational Center. Smith finished third in the seeded women's weight throw with a toss of 63-05.00.
"We had a reasonably good day, as some of our field athletes had strong performances, as did the men's sprinters," said head track and field coach Elvis Forde. "We still have some work to do with our women's sprinters. We did not perform as well as we wanted too, but we still have a couple of weeks before the Missouri Valley Conference Championships to work on that specific area."
In the seeded events, Akil Mills took sixth with a heave of 62-06.50 in the men's weight throw, while Rachelle Harbert cleared a height of 11-07.75 for a 10th-place finish in the women's pole vault.
On the women's side, Tia Harvey finished 36th in the 200-meter dash in a time of 25.36, while Alia McAfee (25.50) ran to a 43rd-place finish in the event. Olivia Myers took 16th-place in the non-seeded 3,000-meter run after completing the race in 10:27.05. In the non-seeded 5,000-meter run, Kirsten Lang finished the race in 18:50.59 placing 25th.
In the field events, Mahnker Dahnweih grabbed a top-20 finish in the non-seeded weight throw and finished the event in 20th place after recording a mark of 51-07.00. Tori Ziegler took 23rd in the non-seeded weight throw with a toss of 50-08.75. Hilary Hobler placed seventh in the long jump after a personal-best leap of 18-07.75, as Lita Wynne's jump of 17-11.75 gave her a 13th-place finish.
On the men's side, Kayode Adegoke crossed the finish line in 21.98 for a 22nd-place finish in the 200-meter dash followed by Fabian Norgrove, who was 31st after recording a mark of 22.08.
In the field events, Ben Pratt (20-06.25) and Antoine Curry (20-04.25) leaped to 36th and 37th-place finishes in the long jump. In the non-seeded weight throw, Curt Jensen placed seventh with a season-best throw of 57-06.25, while Spencer Prince took 17th place with a mark of 54-03.75.
"We are looking forward to tomorrow and seeing how we do," said Forde. "We hope to have strong performances during tomorrow's events, as we wrap up the meet."
The meet will resume Saturday morning with action beginning at 9 a.m., with the mile run.
