Smith Sets Another School Record at Keck Invitational

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Brittany Smith set another school record in the weight throw Saturday, as the Illinois State track and field teams competed in the Keck Invitational hosted by Illinois Wesleyan. Smith won the weight throw with a heave of 65-01.50. The sophomore thrower previously broke the record earlier this season at the Indiana State Dual (Jan. 15) with a throw of 64-02.25.

The women's team won the meet with 119 points, while Illinois Wesleyan finished second with 102 points followed by Carthage in third with 63.5 points. The men's team dominated its competition and won the invitational with 113 points. Illinois Wesleyan took second with 61 team points, while Monmouth rounded out the top-three with 52 points.

In the women's field events, Becky Anderson won the high jump with a leap of 5-3.25, while Rachelle Harbert topped the competition in the pole vault after clearing a personal-best height of 11-11.75. Hilary Hobler (17-7.50) took second in the long jump, while Jen Jenkins (36-7.50) and Kendall Rush (36-0.00) finished the triple jump in third and fourth places, respectively.

Still in field events, Smith won the shot put (52-6.75), while Tori Ziegler finished third in the weight throw with a toss of 57-10.25.

On the track, Hobler finished fourth in the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.42, while Shanelle Williams finished the 200-meter dash in a personal-best time of 26.52 placing fourth. Williams was third in the 55-meter hurdles with a mark of 8.56 and was followed by Laila Jason in fourth after ending the race in 8.75.

Elsewhere on the track, the Redbird women controlled the 400-meter dash, as Marissa Rader (1:00.27), Anderson (1:00.80) and Jason (1:01.73) ended the race in second through fourth places, respectively. In the 3,000-meter run, Kirsten Lang finished second after crossing the finish line in 10:34.42, while Brea Tinney completed the race in 10:56.70 for ninth place.

On the men's side, Antoine Curry won the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.51, while Yosef Tewolde bested the 800-meter run and finished the race in 1:56.29. Matt Mroczynski grabbed a sixth-place finish in the mile with a time of 4:25.87, and Sean Senf ended the 5,000-meter run in 16:05.60 placing third.

Still on the track, the men's hurdles team controlled the 55-meter hurdles, as three Redbirds finished in the top-five. Kendric Smith (7.63), Lechein Neblett (7.71) and Alex Forde (7.73) finished the race in second, third and fifth places, respectively.

Over in field events, Drew Holl jumped to a fourth-place finish in the high jump with a mark of 6-5.50, Kris Mizel finished third with a mark of 44-07.00 in the triple jumpr for third place. Chase Pavelonis won the pole vault with a weight of 15-05.75, while Mike Ziegler took second with a jump of 15-05.75.

Curt Jensen won the shot put with a heave of 56-05.25, while Akil Mills (62-10.50) took first place in the weight throw.

The Redbirds will be back in action Feb. 11-12, as they travel to Ames, Iowa, to compete in the Iowa State Classic.
