NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State starting quarterback Matt Brown will miss the remainder of spring practice due to an injury in his left hip that will require surgery. ISU head coach Brock Spack made the announcement Friday and Brown will have surgery early next week.
Brown experienced pain in his lower back at the tail end of the season and throughout the offseason. Further tests were done, which showed Brown had a torn labrum in his left hip, which will require surgery and two to four months of recovery time.
Spack hates to lose his starting quarterback for spring workouts, but is encouraged that Brown should make a full recovery before the start of summer training camp.
"Our athletic training staff and team doctors were very thorough in working with Matt to diagnose his pain and we are pleased that the problem is going to be easily corrected with surgery," Spack said. "Matt is a tough player and did everything he could to work through this pain in the offseason and I know he will work very hard to get back into playing shape well before we start fall camp."
The Redbirds will begin fall workouts August 5 in preparation for the 2011 season-opener at Eastern Illinois September 1.
