WALNUT, Calif. -
Brittany Smith set a school record with her sixth-place finish in the open section of the hammer throw, as she led the Illinois State track and field teams on the second day of competition Friday at the 53rd Annual Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif., at Hilmer Lodge Stadium. Smith's personal-best mark of 198-03 broke her own record, which she previously set at the 2010 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships with a throw of 193-09.
"One of the reasons we came here was to expose the student-athletes to the best competition in the nation," said head track and field coach Elvis Forde. "Today in the hammer throw Brittany proved she is capable of getting better in all of her events. She had a strong performance and improved her score in the hammer throw by nearly five feet. We expect Brittany to use her strong performance from today (Friday) and use it in the discus throw tomorrow (Saturday)."
On the track, Sade Sealy finished eighth in the open section of the 400-meter dash with a time of 54.42 followed by teammate Alia McAfee in a personal-best time of 55.96 for 28th place. On the men's side, Kayode Adegoke's time of 10.99 in the open section of the 100-meter dash put him in 29th place, and he was 27th after completing the open 200-meter dash in 21.83. Fabian Norgrove was 15th in the open section of the 400-meter dash after finishing the race in 47.89, while Mat Smoody took 17th in the open section of the 800-meter run, crossing the finish line in a personal-best time of 1:50.73.
In the throwing events, Akil Mills used a throw of 188-06 in the hammer throw for a 12th-place finish, while Spencer Prince placed 27th with a personal-best mark of 177-01. Tim Glover was third in the javelin throw in the invitational section with a 242-07 mark. Curt Jensen grabbed a top-10 finish in the shot put with a personal-best mark of 56-05.25. In the jumps, Tyler Knight leaped to an 11th-place finish in the triple jump with a mark of 47-04.50, while Drew Holl cleared 6-04.75 in the open section of the high jump.
"Overall the men's and women's teams have done well against strong competition," said Forde. "We have had a lot of season and personal bests so far this weekend. We hope the strong performances and competition will help the team throughout the season."
Smith will be the lone Redbird competing at the Mt. SAC Relays Saturday, as the sophomore will attempt to best the competition in the shot put at 3 p.m. (CST). The remainder of the ISU track and field team members in California will participate in the Beach Invitational, hosted by Long Beach State. The Beach Invitational will begin at 11 a.m. (CST) with the men's shot put and the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase.
