Redbirds Wrap Up Competition at Gateway Classic

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - A few members of the Illinois State track and field teams completed action at the Gateway Classic Saturday in Edwardsville, Ill., on the campus of SIU-Edwardsville.

For the women's team, Shandel Ellis finished third in the 200-meter dash (26.43) and sixth in the 400-meter dash (1:03.31), while teammate Jordan Frey was fifth in the 200-meter dash (27.25) and placed third in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:01.80. Breanna Staples ran to a seventh-place finish in the 400-meter dash in 1:03.60. Jenna Combs finished the 100-meter hurdles in 16.22 for fifth place and second in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:07.60, while Marissa Rader completed the 400-meter hurdles in 1:09.72 for fourth place.

Still on the track, in the 800-meter run, Geena Loesch ran to third in 2:28.22, as Kimblery Christensen was close behind in fourth with a time of 2:32.47. Kirsten Lang finished the 1500-meter run in 5:05.32 for third place, while Megan Fry was seventh with a time of 5:21.07.

In the field events, Becky Anderson (5-04) and Caitlin Roberts (5-00) took first and third, respectively, in the high jump, while Emily Swift was second in the pole vault after clearing 12-06. In the long jump, Lita Wynne bested the competition with a personal-best mark of 18-05.75, while teammates Hilary Hobler (17-04.00) and Kendall Rush (16-10.50) took fifth and sixth, respectively. Mahnker Dahnweih finished ninth in the shot put with a throw of 36-06.75 and used a toss of 114-09.75 in the discus throw for seventh place.

On the men's side, Ben Sparkman (10.87) and Coty Kramer (10.96) finished second and third, respectively, in the 100-meter dash. The duo teamed up again in the 200-meter dash, as Kramer (22.64) finished second, while Sparkman (23.39) was fourth followed by Matt Wiggen (24.59) in fifth. Wiggen was back in action in the 400-meter dash and ran to a 13th-place finish in 53.68. In the 110-meter hurdles, Josh Pope (15.18) and Alex Forde (15.34) grabbed top-three finishes. Nicholas Gallardo was sixth with a time of 16.11 in the 110-meter hurdles and fourth in the 400-meter hurdles after crossing the finish line in 59.94.

Elsewhere on the track, Nick Geyer took second in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:00.41, while Yosef Tewolde (2:02.10) was fifth. Erik Stanton (4:14.17), Sean Senf (4:25.45) and John Navarro (4:31.76) were second, sixth and seventh, respectively, in the 1500-meter run.

In the field events, Mike Ziegler won the pole vault after clearing a personal-best height of 15-05.25. In the shot put, Patrick Trofimuk (45-10.00) and Anthony Wirth (44-11.50) were second and third, respectively, while Michael Kroeger (41-09.18) and Colin Fane (41-01.50) took eighth and 10th places, respectively. Wirth (135-08.00) and Trofimuk (132-02.75) finished seventh and 10th, respectively, in the discus, while Kroeger (117-04.50) and Fane (115-03.50) were 12th and 13th, respectively.

ISU will compete next at the Lenny Lyles Invitational Friday, April 22, in Louisville, Ky.
