CHARLESTON, Ill. - Tim Glover set a school record in the javelin throw Saturday, as he led the Illinois State track and field teams at the Big Blue Classic in Charleston, Ill., at O’Brien Field. Glover bested the competition in the javelin with a mark of 249-00. The Normal, Ill., native broke his own record, which he previously set last season at the Missouri Valley Conference Championships (5/15/10) with a throw of 233-11.
The Redbird sprinters dominated the 400-meter dash, as Sade Sealy won the race with a time of 55.63, while Alia McAfee (56.45) and Shandel Ellis (58.17) finished in third and fourth, respectively. Jil Kerkman ran to fifth place in the 800-meter run after crossing the finish line in 2:15.70, McAfee (25.12), Ellis (25.15) and Sealy (25.26) were third, fourth and sixth, respectively, in the 200-meter dash. Kristen Zillmer (10:56.65) and Kirsten Lang (11:10.62) recorded first- and second-place finishes in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, while Jess Husted won the 1,500-meter run in 4:37.93.
The 4X100-meter relay team of Meaka Brents, Sealy, Ellis and McAfee ran to a first-place finish in 47.82, while McAfee, Sealy, Ellis and Jenna Combs combined to win the 4X400-meter relay in 3:50.80.
The ISU women controlled a majority of the field events during the meet. Brittany Smith won the shot put with a heave of 50-06.75 and finished third in the discus throw (164-08). Tori Ziegler was third with a mark of 46-10.25 in the shot put and 12th in the discus throw (135-00). In her first meet of the outdoor season, Leigh Petranoff won the javelin throw with a toss of 156-01, while Katelyn Massey (106-02) was fourth.
In the jumps, Lita Wynne grabbed a top-five finish in the long jump with a mark of 17-11.50. In the pole vault, Rachelle Harbert (12-02.00) and Emily Swift (11-08.00) cleared the bar for third and fourth places. Amanda Albrecht maintained her momentum from the indoor season, as she won the high jump in her first outdoor competition after clearing the bar set at 5-04.25. Becky Anderson placed second in the high jump with a mark of 5-02.25, while Caitlin Roberts grabbed a 10th-place finish with a height of 5-00.25. Kendall Rush was sixth in the triple jump with a distance of 38-01.25, while Albrecht was 10th with a jump of 36-09.50.
On the men’s side, Alex Forde finished seventh in the 110-meter hurdles in 14.80, while Alex Roark ran to a sixth-place finish in the 400-meter dash with a time of 49.56. Ben Sparkman (10.86) and Coty Kramer (10.94) were fourth and eighth, respectively, in the 100-meter dash. Tyler Knight was eighth in 22.28 in the 200-meter dash. Mat Smoody (1:52.42) crossed the finish line in first place in the 800-meter run, while Yosef Tewolde (1:55.57) took sixth.
Sparkman, Kramer, Knight and Kayode Adegoke made up the 4X100-relay team that finished second with a time of 42.34. Kramer, Tewolde, Smoody and Fabian Norgrove ran to second place in the 4X400-meter relay in 3:17.54.
In the men’s field events, Curt Jensen won the shot put with a throw of 56-01.75, while Anthony Wirth (47-06.25), Pat Trofimuk (47-05.25), Spencer Prince (46-01.50) and Colin Fane (45-03.00) finished in sixth through ninth places, respectively. Brian Pflederer finished third in the javelin throw after recording a toss of 177-11.
Still in the field events, Knight fouled in four of his five attempts, but recorded a leap of 21-08.75 in the long jump for fourth place, and he won the triple jump with leap of 48-09.50. With a mark of 153-07, Wirth was seventh in the discus throw, while Jensen (146-03) finished the event in 10th. Chase Pavelonis and Michael Ziegler each cleared 14-07.50 in the pole vault, while Drew Holl won the high jump with a height of 6-06.00.
The Redbirds will be back in action next weekend, April 8-9, at the Lee Calhoun Invitational in Macomb, Ill.
