Redbirds Set to Compete at Lenny Lyles Invitational

NORMAL, Ill. - After competing at three meets last weekend, the Illinois State track and field teams will travel to Louisville, Ky., to compete in the Lenny Lyles Invitational Friday at the Cardinal Park Track Stadium.

Illinois State will compete against Central Michigan, Louisville and Western Kentucky. The one-day meet will begin with the men's javelin throw at 9:30 a.m. (CST), while running events will start at 2 p.m. (CST) with the women's 4X100-meter relay.

Brittany Smith continues to add to her already decorated college career. The Oak Park, Ill., native set a school record with her sixth-place finish in the open section of the hammer throw at the 53rd Annual Mt. SAC Relays last Friday. Smith's personal-best mark of 198-03 broke her own record, which she previously set at the 2010 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships with a throw of 193-09.

Tim Glover was named the Missouri Valley Conference Men's Field Athlete of the Week on Tuesday, after competing against some of the top javelin throwers in the nation over the past weekend. The Normal, Ill., native was third in the javelin throw in the invitational section of the Mt. SAC Relays Friday with a mark of 242-07. The sophomore thrower was back in action Saturday at the Beach Invitational and bested the competition in the javelin with a heave of 247-07, nearly reaching his school record of 249-00. Glover currently has the fourth-best throw in the nation with his record-setting throw.

Several other Redbirds recorded personal-best efforts over the weekend. In the 400-meter dash, Alia McAfee ran a personal-best time of 55.96, while Jess Husted finished in a personal-best time of 4:28.40 in the 1500-meter run. Aisha Praught completed the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a personal-best time of 10:23.56, while Samantha Bluske ran a personal-best time of 34:25.55 in the 10,000-meter run. Mat Smoody crossed the finish line in 1:50.73, which was a personal-best time in the 800-meter run.

In the field events, Spencer Prince recorded a personal-best mark of 177-01 in the hammer throw, while Curt Jensen grabbed a top-10 finish in the shot put with a personal-best throw of 56-05.25. In the long jump, Lita Wynne won the event with a personal-best leap of 18-05.75. Mike Ziegler won the pole vault after clearing a personal-best height of 15-05.25.
