MACOMB, Ill. - After Friday's first day of competition, both of the Illinois State track and field teams are currently in first place at the Lee Calhoun Invitational in Macomb, Ill., at Hanson Field.

"The efforts of the student-athletes were admirable based on the weather conditions," said head track and field coach Elvis Forde. "Tori (Ziegler) had a personal-best performance in the hammer throw, and it was nice to see her get a top performance in that event. Hopefully, she can use that throughout the season and gain more confidence. We didn't have many running events today, but a few freshmen runners were able to gain experience in the 10,000-meter run, and they did well, which is good to see early in the outdoor season."

With eight events scored, the ISU women are currently in first place with 71 team points, while Marquette (44 points) and Wisconsin-Milwaukee (32.5 points) are in second and third, respectively. The men's team is also in first with 38.50 points after seven scored events, followed by Western Illinois (34 points) in second and Monmouth (33.50 points) in third.

On the track for the women, Megan Fry won the 10,000-meter run after crossing the finish line in 39:52.67, while Annette White finished the race in 40:08.72 for second place. The duo combined for 18 points.

Amanda Albrecht bested the competition in the high jump and scored 10 points for ISU with a leap of 5-05, while Caitlin Roberts finished in a six-way tie for ninth place with a mark of 4-11. ISU dominated the long jump, as four Redbirds finished in the top 10. Lita Wynne finished third in the event with a jump of 18-00.50, while Jen Jenkins (17-09), Kendall Rush (17-07) and Hilary Hobler (17-07) took fifth through seventh places, respectively. The four jumpers tallied 11 points for the women's team.

In the throws, Brittany Smith (183-06) won the hammer throw and was followed by Ziegler in third with a personal-best throw of 165-03. The pair combined for 16 points. Leigh Petranoff took first in the javelin throw, after recording a throw of 147-11 for 10 points. Adding six points to the team score was Katelyn Massey, who finished third in the javelin throw with a personal-best mark of 114-11.

In the men's 10,000-meter run, Sean Senf was second with a time of 32:41.92 and collected eight points.

Tim Glover, the MVC Field Athlete of the Week, won the javelin with a toss of 237-07, while Brian Pflederer (174-00) took third, adding 18 combined points to the team score. Drew Holl grabbed eight points for the `Birds with a second-place finish in the high jump after clearing 6-08.25, while Tyler Knight (22-00.75) and Ben Pratt (21-02.50) finished fifth and eighth, respectively, in the long jump.

"We can enjoy the performances we had today," said Forde. "It was a good day for us, but not fantastic. We have to get some rest tonight and come back tomorrow ready to compete and finish strong in the invitational."

Competition at the Lee Calhoun Invitational will conclude Saturday with the discus throw beginning at 10 a.m., and running events starting at 11 a.m., with the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
