Redbirds Wrap Up Regular Season at Billy Hayes Invite

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - With the Missouri Valley Conference Outdoor Championships just around the corner, the Illinois State track and field teams completed their regular seasons Friday at the Billy Hayes Invitational in Bloomington, Ind., at the Robert C. Haugh Track & Field Complex.

In the women's field events, Lita Wynne finished second in the long jump with a mark of 18-05.00 and was followed by teammates Hilary Hobler (17-04.00) and Kendall Rush (17-00.00) in seventh and eighth places, respectively. In the triple jump, Jen Jenkins finished fourth with a leap of 37-10.75, while Becky Anderson placed fourth in the high jump, clearing the bar set at 5-03.25.

Brittany Smith's throw of 164-04 in the discus gave her second place in the event. Smith went on to finish fourth in the shot put (51-07.25) and fifth in the hammer throw (192-02). Tori Ziegler (48-10.25) was sixth in the shot put, as Mahnker Dahnweih (173-09) finished the hammer throw in a tie for ninth place. Katelyn Massey (121-05), Anderson (102-04) and Hobler (83-07) all grabbed top-10 finishes in the javelin throw.

On the track, in the invitational 1500-meter run, Jess Husted crossed the finish line in fourth place with a personal-best time of 4:26.68. Hobler returned to action, this time on the track, as she was sixth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.75. Jordan Frey finished the 200-meter dash in 27.13 for 14th place, while Jenna Combs completed the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 1:04.33 for eighth place. In the 800-meter run, Geena Loesch (2:21.08) and Ruth Allen (2:21.69) were 20th and 21st, respectively. Kimberly Christensen took 12th in the 1500-meter run, crossing the finish line in 4:59.83.

For the men's field events, Kris Mizel leaped to a sixth-place finish in the triple jump with a mark of 44-08.00. Mike Ziegler cleared 15-05.00 in the pole vault and finished the event in a five-way tie for seventh place, while Chase Pavelonis (14-11.00) ended the event in a tie for 12th.

Curt Jensen took third place in the shot put with a toss of 55-11.25, as Chris McIntyre (49-06.50) and Patrick Trofimuk (48-02.00) also grabbed top-10 finishes, placing eighth and 10th, respectively. Akil Mills (189-08) and Spencer Prince (183-00) were sixth and ninth in the hammer throw, respectively, while Brian Pflederer (170-02) was third in the javelin throw.

Over on the track, Ben Sparkman (22.38) was 16th in the 200-meter dash and was followed by teammate Fabian Norgrove (22.40) in 17th place. Alex Forde ran to a 12th-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 55.78. Matt Wiggen was 21st in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:58.45, while Erik Stanton finished 11th in 4:04.81 in the 1500-meter run.

The Redbirds return to action Friday, May 13 at the State Farm Valley Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
