Redbirds Add Wide Receiver From the Sunshine State

NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State football head coach Brock Spack added another piece to his 2012 recruiting class Thursday, when he announced the signing of wide receiver Robert Moore (Miami, Fla./Hialeah HS) to a National Letter of Intent.

The 5-foot-11, 180-pound wide out had scholarship offers from Bowl Subdivision programs Bowling Green, Southern Methodist, New Mexico, Florida Atlantic and Middle Tennessee. However, he was not able to take his SAT exam prior to the deadline for National Signing Day on Feb. 1 and had to take a later test, which resulted in several of the schools backing away.

Moore was a late signee for the Redbirds and his path to ISU took longer than most, but Spack was pleased to add the talented and fast receiver to his squad for 2012.

"We are excited to add Robert to the team and are fortunate to add an athlete of his caliber," Spack stated. "He is a fast, athletic receiver, who could play defensive back for us, but we want to see what he can do at receiver first. He had several offers from other FBS programs, but after his mix-up with the SAT some of the other schools backed off. Coach (Dan) Shula did a great job of keeping the lines of communication open, and when he got a good score on the test once he took it, we were able to bring him aboard."

Moore caught 38 passes for 678 yards during his senior year and finished the year with four touchdown passes. He was also dangerous in the return game, averaging 29.7 yards per kick return and 31.4 yards per punt return. Those numbers earned him All-Dade County honors, and he helped the team advance to the state playoffs for the first time in nine years.

With Moore's signing, the Redbirds have added a total of 17 new players to the roster for 2012. The team will begin its spring practice session with it first of 15 workouts March 27 at 3:30 p.m. at Hancock Stadium. ISU will open the 2012 football season at home against Dayton Sept. 1.
