Official USTFCCCA Release

NEW ORLEANS - Illinois State junior javelin thrower Tim Glover has officially been moved up onto the watch list for the 2012 Bowerman Award, as announced by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Wednesday. The Bowerman Award is awarded to the best male and female collegiate track & field athlete of that year.

An All-American in the field, Glover is the reigning NCAA Division I national champion in the javelin, and has strung together three solid performances en route to defend his title this outdoor season. The two-time Missouri Valley Conference champion opened up his junior campaign at home against Southern Illinois in dual meet action, winning the javelin competition with a mark of 242-10, 50 feet further than anyone else at the meet and breaking the Redbird Track & Field Complex facility record (233-11) by more than nine feet. He was named the MVC Male Field Athlete of the Week for that performance.

Following up at the Sea Ray Relays, the Normal, Ill., native took one step further to fulfilling his title defense, throwing 266-09 (81.30m), three feet, three inches further than his 2011 NCAA Division I National Championship throw of 263-06 last June. In addition, that mark was also 51 feet further than anyone else competing in the event that day, resulting as the recipient of the Tony Wilson Award. Four awards are given out each year at the Sea Ray Relays to recognize the best male and female track & field athletes at the meet.

His mark of 266-09 now ranks him in the top-10 performers of all-time in NCAA Division I (No. 9), and first in the nation this season by 10 feet, three inches. His mark was also just 70 centimeters off the Olympic A standard (82.00m), which would qualify him to represent the United States in the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London, if he was to finish in the top-nine at the Olympic trials at the end of June. That throw also ranks him eighth in the world in the javelin, earning him his second-consecutive MVC Male Field Athlete of the Week honors this season.

Glover then took his talents to the prestigious Drake Relays, served as the final tune up before he heads into the 2012 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships May 11-13. Faced with cold temperatures and headwinds upwards of 30 mph, Glover managed to throw 229-10, claiming second place on the day.

The Bowerman debuted in 2009 and is presented annually by the USTFCCCA. It is named for the legendary Oregon track & field and cross country coach, Bill Bowerman, who served the sport of track & field in numerous ways. His leadership in the USTFCCCA's predecessor organization, the National Collegiate Track Coaches Association, and his contributions to NCAA track & field and the running community as a whole are among his many lasting legacies.

Glover returns to action May 11 at the 2012 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships, as he attempts to three-peat as the conference champion in the javelin. The rest of the Redbirds head to Bloomington, Ind., this weekend to take part in the Billy Hayes Invitational, in preparation for the conference championships the following weekend. Fans can follow Glover and the rest of the Illinois State track & field teams online or via Twitter at @ISURedbirds and @ISU_Track_XC.
