CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Illinois State punter Patrick Wright was one of 36 Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) players named to the College Football Performance Awards (CFPA) preseason watch list for the organization's 2012 Punter Award.
The purpose of the College Football Performance Awards is to provide the most scientifically rigorous conferments in college football. Recipients are selected exclusively based upon objective scientific rankings of the extent to which individual players increase the overall effectiveness of their teams.
Wright was named to the list along with fellow Missouri Valley Football Conference punters Lucas Hileman of Indiana State, Kyle Bernard of Northern Iowa, Cole Zwiefelhofer of South Dakota and Nick Liste of Youngstown State. He also joins teammates Matt Brown (Quarterback), Tyrone Walker (Wide Receiver), Shelby Harris and Nate Palmer (Defensive Tackle/End) and Evan Frierson (Linebacker) on the CFPA's 2012 preseason watch lists.
In 2011, Wright served as Illinois State's primary punter and averaged 37.7 yards on 48 attempts. The Lemont, Ill., native pinned 18 punts within the 20-yard line and recorded four punts of 50-plus yards, including a season-best 55-yard punt in a win at Missouri State.
The Redbirds will open the 2012 season at Hancock Stadium, Sept.1, against Pioneer Football League opponent Dayton.
