Day One Results
ZIONSVILLE, Ind. - With a challenging course and a competitive field, along with consistent winds throughout the day, the Illinois State men's golf team sits in 12th place with a team score of 631 (324-307) after the first day of play at the Wolf Run Intercollegiate.
Head coach Ray Kralis recognized that the team had a slow start, but that it will take and apply what it learned from Saturday into the final round Sunday.
"The golf course does not let up and even a slight miss on the wrong side can be very penalizing," Kralis said. "We had some troubles right at the start and never seemed to find a comfort level in the first round. While we looked more like ourselves in the second round, a few bigger numbers derailed some of our momentum. We got in our own way and will learn from it going forward."
Tied for 48th place were Wils Hawn (83-74) and Jordan Fahel (80-77), as both carded a 157 for the first two rounds of competition. Just one stroke behind was Kyle Meihofer, who shot two consistent 79 rounds for a total of 158. Tyler Gentilella shot a 160 (82-78), while Parker Freiburg recorded a two-round score of 161 (83-78).
Illinois has a commanding lead over the field with a team score of 563 (282-281), while Kentucky sits in second with 588 (299-289). Illinois golfer Thomas Detry shot a 2-under-par in both rounds for a score of 138 (69-69), while his teammate David Kim is in second with a score of 140 (70-70). With the hopes of a comeback, Illinois State will begin the third and final round Sunday with a 7:30 a.m. (CST), shotgun start.
