AKRON, Ohio – After the first two rounds of the Firestone Invitational, the Illinois State men's golf team is tied for eighth place with Ball State, carding a team score of 595 (296-299). Jordan Fahel and Zach Burry each shot a 1-over-par 145, leading the Redbirds into the final round of the invitational.
Head coach Ray Kralis liked the stellar performance by freshman golfer Burry.
"Zach looked solid all day, and Jordan stepped up in the second round, when we needed it." Kralis said. "Overall, everyone played good golf through stretches despite a swing or two that lead to bigger numbers. So, we can take positives into round three and make a move with a strong team effort."
As Fahel and Burry led the way, Tyler Gentilella shot a 1-over-par 73 in the first round, and ended the day with a 36-hole score of 150 (73-77). Kyle Meihofer ended day one with a 155 (76-79), while Jason Marrs was two strokes behind, carding a two-round score of 157 (76-81).
Out of the 17 teams, Xavier is leading the way with a total score of 577 (287-290). Akron (287-285) and USC Aiken (289-293) are tied in second with the team score of 582, while Miami (Ohio) (289-294) sits in fourth place with 583. Illinois State is right in the middle of the pack, heading into the final round.
The Redbirds open the final round of play at 7:30 a.m. (CST) in hopes of moving up the team leaderboard during the third round.
