NORMAL, Ill. – Illinois State's Kaitlyn Early was named a Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week, MVC commissioner Doug Elgin announced Wednesday. Early was the female student-athlete to receive the honor, while Loyola's Daniel Hare was the male student-athlete winner.
Although the Redbirds played only one match over the past week, Early made it count, tallying 36 assists in a 3-0 win at Indiana State on Oct. 3, leading her team to a .297 hitting percentage in the match. She added three kills and two digs in the win.
Early's effort helped the Redbirds to their seventh-consecutive victory, as they improved to 11-5 overall and 5-0 in MVC play. Early has been just as impressive in the classroom, where she carries a 3.75 cumulative grade-point average (GPA) while pursuing a degree in mathematics teacher education.
Early is Illinois State's second student-athlete to earn the weekly honor this fall. Aryn Newsom, a senior goalkeeper for the ISU soccer team, earned the recognition on Aug. 27.
