NORMAL, Ill. – The Illinois State men's golf team signed Michael Mounce and Trent Wallace to continue their academic and athletic careers at Illinois State, as announced by head coach Ray Kralis Monday.
Kralis feels the duo will be great assets for the team next year.
"Trent and Michael will be great additions to our Redbird family," Kralis said. "I love how they compete and play the game of golf. They clearly understand that it is about scoring, and they can both get the ball in the hole with very strong short games. Both players are among the highest ranked in the state, with Trent being at the top of the 2015 class in Illinois. They have the experience and the competitive drive to challenge for playing time as soon as they arrive on campus."
Mounce, a product of El Paso-Gridley High School, joins the Redbirds after being a four-time state championship qualifier, finishing third as a senior. He finished fifth in the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) Bass Pro Shops/Payne Steward Junior Championship and first in the Mid American Junior Golf Tour (MAJGT) Championship. He held a 4.0 grade-point average (GPA), while leading his team to a second-place finish at the state championship his sophomore year and first-place finishes during his junior and senior seasons.
Wallace is coming out of Joliet West High School with five AJGA tournament top-25 finishes, including a second and ninth-place finish. He led his team to four state championship tournaments, and finished second in sectionals as a junior and was an individual medalist at regionals as a senior. Wallace also finished tied for first in regionals during his sophomore season.
The new Redbirds will join the team for the 2015-16 season with hopes to try and fill the void left by the senior class.
