ST LOUIS – Illinois State's Katy Winge has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week, MVC Commissioner Doug Elgin announced Wednesday.
Winge, a senior women's basketball player from Eden Prairie, Minnesota, led the Redbirds in their final two non-conference games, as she averaged 12.5 points against Butler and No. 25 DePaul. In the two games, Winge shot 53 percent from the field, 67 percent from three-point range and was perfect from the free throw line (5-of-5). She also averaged three rebounds per game. Against Butler (Dec. 22), Winge netted 11 points and had one rebound in 38 minutes, to go along with a steal and an assist. Against No. 25 DePaul (Dec. 28), Winge scored 14 points, shooting 5-of-7 from the field with two shots coming from beyond the arc. Ten of Winge's 14 points came in the first half. She also pulled down five rebounds and dished out two assists in the game.
On the season, Winge is the second-leading scorer for ISU, averaging 10.5 points per game. She leads the team in three-point field goal percentage, connecting on 36 percent of her shot attempts. The senior guard is double majoring in broadcast journalism and marketing and holds a cumulative grade-point average of 3.84.
To qualify for Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week laurels, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20, completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing.
