Despite multiple tie breakers and three-set matches, the Illinois State men's tennis team (5-6) fell at South Alabama (11-5), 5-2, at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts Thursday.
The Redbirds started the day off by losing the doubles-point, and ISU could not regain momentum against a South Alabama team that came in winning seven of its last nine matchups.
"Today was tough on the guys, as we haven't gotten to prepare as we usually do for the matches," ISU head coach Mark Klysner said. "Hopefully we can get a little healthier for tomorrow."
In No. 3 doubles action, Muddappa Appanervanda and Rodrigo Oliveira (14-4) picked up a victory by defeating Ger Gruindelingh and Tuki Jacobs, 8-4. In the No. 1 doubles match, partners Jakub Eisner and Rolando Torrellas (10-11), fell to Manuel Belda and Quincy Oija, 8-3, while in the No. 2 doubles match, Urh Kranjc Domiter and Dylan Steffens (0-2), lost to Daniel Leithner and Juan Troglia, 8-4.
In single competition, Torrellas and Oliveira took away victories moving them to .500 on the season. In No. 5 singles, Torrellas (13-13), defeated Troglia in a tie-breaker, 2-6, 7-6 (7-2), 7-5. In No. 6 singles, Oliveira (12-12) rolled past Olij, 6-2, 6-1.
In No. 3 singles, Appanervanda (12-13), lost to Belda, 6-2, 2-6, 7-5, while in No. 4 singles, Domiter (1-9), was defeated by Gruindelingh, 3-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-2. In No. 1 singles play, Eisner (7-16), lost to Leitner, 6-2, 6-3, and in the No. 2 singles spot Wilson (7-16), was beat 6-0, 4-6, 6-2.
