GULF SHORES, Ala. -
Illinois State (5-7) dropped Friday's non-conference matchup to No. 64 Buffalo (9-4), 6-1 at a neutral site in Gulf Shores, Ala. Rolando Torrellas' doubles and singles victories highlighted ISU's tough matchup against nationally-ranked Buffalo.
"Today was another tough day for us, as we suffered a couple of injuries," head coach Mark Klysner. "Credit goes to Buffalo in playing better today. We'll try and rest and heal up in the next few days and get ready for our next string of matches."
In No. 1 doubles, Torrellas and Jakub Eisner (11-11) defeated Damien David and Akhil Metha, 8-4, while No. 2 doubles partners Urh Kranjc Domiter and Dylan Steffens (0-3) lost to Jonathan Hannestad and Sergio Arevalillo, 8-7. The No. 3 doubles team of Muddappa Appanervanda and Rodrigo Oliveira (14-5) who have been dominant all year, fell to Sebastian Ionescu and Yevgeniy Jason Shkodnik, 8-5.
In No. 5 singles, Torrellas (14-13) snagged a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Metha. In No. 1 singles Jacob Wilson (7-17) fell to David, 6-2, 6-3, in No. 2 singles. Einser was defeated by Ionescu, 7-5, 6-2, and Appanervanda lost to Jonathan Hannestad, 6-2, 6-2, in No. 3 singles. In No. 4 singles Kranjc Domiter lost to Arevalillo, 7-5, 6-4, and in No. 6 singles, Oliveira lost in a third-set tie-breaker to Shkodnik, 6-7, 6-3, 10-4.
The Redbirds will now continue their 10-match road trip March 28-30 at the Middle Tennessee Shootout.
