The Illinois State men's golf team upped their game and finished ninth at the Seminole Intercollegiate in Tallahassee, Fla. Since the weather forecast for Sunday predicted less than favorable conditions, the Redbirds played the last two rounds to finish with a team score of 887 (304-289-294).
In the midst of a very competitive and highly ranked field, head coach Ray Kralis was proud of his squad's overall performance and progress they have made this spring.
"Parker stepped up today in both the second and third rounds posting the low 36 hole score, a 5 under par 139, in a very competitive field of 75 players," Kralis said. "Tyler also bounced back in strong fashion posting two even par 72's, and with Wils' second round 71, the squad set the right tone for the day with a solid team score of 289 in the morning. The tougher hole locations in the final round resulted in higher scores across the board, so our 294 in the afternoon was very respectable as well. Overall, I am pleased with how the group responded after a tough opening day at this event, and I feel like we have moved in the right direction in the first half of the spring gaining confidence and momentum for the final stretch leading into the conference championship."
Parker Freiburg led the way, after firing a 2-under-par in the second round and 69 in the third to finish with a score of 215 (76-70-69) and place 11th on the individual leaderboard. Tyler Gentilella also fired an eagle in the late in the third that pushed him to finish tied for 36th and an overall score of 224 (80-72-72). Wils Hawn carded a 71 in the second round and an eagle in the third round to assist him in finishing with a score of 229 (76-76-77) and tied for 40th place. Jordan Fahel finished with a 229 (76-76-77), while Josh Edison ended the tournament with a score of 233 (76-81-76).
34th ranked Mercer claimed first place with a team score of 856 (282-279-295), while No. 13 ranked Florida State tying with No. 27 ranked South Florida for second after both finishing with a score of 862 (290-279-293) (289-289-284), respectively. Though the field seven teams in the top-75 and three of which are in the top-50, the Redbirds finished ahead of BigTen Conference member Penn State and Big South conference member Winthrop.
Illinois State will have a three-week break before returning to competition at the ASU Red Wolf Classic, April 7-8.
