CORDOVA, Tenn. – Using first-day rounds of 292 (+4) and 297 (+9), the Illinois State men's golf team got off to a fast start at the Memphis Intercollegiate: Spirited by Old Dominick and are in fourth place with one round to play in the event.
Tournament host Memphis has jumped out to a 16-stroke lead in the event and have an eight-under-par team score of 568 through 36 holes. Eastern Kentucky (584), Tarleton State (587) and Wright State (587) are just ahead of ISU's 589. Central Arkansas is tied with the Redbirds, while Troy (591), Lipscomb (593), Dayton (597), ULM (599), and Jacksonville State (610
ISU put two players inside of the top-10 in the individual standings, led by Freshman Gonzalo Cuella, who is tied for sixth after opening his day with a one-under 71, a round that had five birdies and nine pars. He came back in the afternoon round with a one-over 73, including two birdies and 14 pars. His par-four scoring (4.00) is tied for the fourth-best in the field.
Pietro Pontiggia is tied for tenth with a 36-hole score of 145 (+1), as he carded a one-over 73 with three birdies and 11 pars. His second round had four more birdies and 11 pars in the second round for an even-par 72, giving him a one-over 145 for the day, while he is tied for the fourth-best par-four scoring average in the field (4.00).
Max Faucquez – the 36-hole leader in total pars (29) – is tied for 33rd after matching rounds of 75 for a two-round score of 150. In addition to the 29 pars, he also added a birdie to his total, at +6 for the day.
TJ Barger had rounds of 73 and 78 for a 151, tied for 39th in the field, while his 26 pars on the day are tied for the seventh-most in the tournament field. He also added two birdies on the day for his +7, 36-hole score. Freshman Sam Ottwell is tied for 50th with a +9 153, as he had two birdies and 24 pars.
