Men's Golf to Compete at Valley Championship

Illinois State looks to take home the first place trophy at the Missouri Valley Conference Championship Tournament.

NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State men's golf team will travel to Silvis, Ill., to compete in the 2014 Missouri Valley Conference Championship Monday and Tuesday. The two-day, 54-hole tournament hosted by the Redbirds will be held at the par-71, 7,258-yard course, TPC Deere Run.

Last year, Illinois State took second place to Wichita State with a team score of 890 (297-296-297), and though Wichita State is predicted to win in the pre-championship poll by five votes, Illinois State looks to avenge that loss, as the Redbirds are voted to finish second.

In the pre-championship poll, WSU received seven first-place votes with a total of 79 points, while ISU had two first-place votes to go with 74 points. Evansville was picked to finish third with 59 points.

"First and foremost, we must not beat ourselves if we want a chance to win," head coach Ray Kralis said. "We will continue to stress mental toughness and patience. We need everyone battling and competing all 54 holes, and that is the expectation."

Leading for the Redbirds will be Parker Freiburg followed by Wils Hawn and Jordan Fahel. Tyler Gentilella will play the No. 4 spot and Josh Edison will compete the in fifth spot.

The first 36-holes will be played Monday and the remaining 18-holes on Tuesday. Play will begin Monday with an 8:30 am shotgun start.
