NORMAL, Ill. – Steven Mullins signed a National Letter of Intent to continue his athletic and academic careers with the men's golf team in the fall at Illinois State, as announced by head men's golf coach Ray Kralis Wednesday afternoon.
"I love the way Steven plays the game of golf," Kralis said. "He understands that it is about getting the ball in the hole in the fewest number of shots and plays instinctively reacting to his target instead of thinking about his motion. He has built that level of trust by competing extensively as a junior player and in high school, and it is my job to help him take his game to even higher levels without losing track of what got him here."
Mullins, who is a three-time state qualifier from Normal West, finished in third place at the 2012 Illinois High School Association (IHSA) State Championship. Prior to the 2013 state championship, he took fourth place at the IHSA regional championship. In 2012, Mullins earned medalist honors at the IHSA Regional before placing eighth in the sectional championship. In his first state appearance, Mullins finished second in the regional tournament.
"I also love his passion for Illinois State and desire to be a student-athlete here that came from growing up in Redbird Country," Kralis continued. "He has competed at very high levels and enjoyed success with wins or top finishes at each of them. While this will be another step up, I am confident that he will be motivated to grow and make an impact on Redbird golf."
Mullins not only had success during the school year, but he also did well during summer tournaments. He won the MAJGT Illinois State Classic, shooting a 72 and 68. Mullins grabbed second place at the Big I State Championship and took third at the 2011-12 Country Youth Classics.
Most recently, Mullins was the 2013 Illinois State Junior Amatuer Qualifier medalist, as well as the 2013 Optimist International Qualifying medalist honors to advance to the International Championship. In the Optimist International at PGA National, Mullins finished tied for 17th place.
