NORMAL, Ill. – The Illinois State Athletics department is looking for energetic ISU students to try out for the chance to become part of Team Reggie Redbird, the official mascot of Illinois State. Open try outs are scheduled for Thursday, September 18, from 3 to 8 p.m. in the Redbird Room at Redbird Arena.
Reggie Redbird is ISU's biggest fan. He makes appearances at nearly all home sporting events and you are sure to find Reggie busy at what he does best; helping with crowd interaction and making people laugh. When Reggie isn't busy cheering on his fellow Redbirds, he is around the community at various charity and promotional events, school functions and other parties.
"Team Reggie is a group of ISU students formed to take care of Reggie and his demanding schedule. It is important to have Reggie at every possible event, rain or shine, with Redbird spirit," explained Assistant Athletics Director of Marketing and Promotions LB Lyons. "Team Reggie is looking for confident, dedicated individuals who are outgoing and can help this program grow."
To be eligible for try outs, students must be enrolled in classes full-time at Illinois State and have a minimum 2.5 grade point average (GPA). No previous cheer or mascot experience is required, but is a plus for candidates. Try outs will consist of in-person interviews and improvisational performances through a series of tasks including, but not limited to the following: skit, freestyle dancing, crowd engagement and the Illinois State fight song.
After the initial try out date, candidates will be notified for a second interview no later than Wednesday, September 24.
