MADISON, Wisc. – After the final round of the Badger Invitational, the Illinois State men's golf team finished tied for ninth with Bowling Green State, shooting a team score of 916 (306-306-304). Jordan Fahel and Josh Edison led the team for the third round in a row, as the Redbirds scored their best team score of the tournament Tuesday.
Head coach Ray Kralis knows the team performed below expectations, but there are positives to take from the invitational.
"Our performance over the three rounds was well below expectations." Kralis said. "While we finished ahead of the other MVC (Missouri Valley Conference) schools and caught Rutgers, we were missing the low score or two that we need in each round to be more competitive in a strong field. Thankfully, we have a couple days to prepare and a quick turnaround where we all start again at zero."
Fahel finished the tournament tied in 22nd overall carding a total of 224 (74-75-75), while Edison closed out the tournament in 29th place, firing a 54-hole score of 229 (76-76-77). Kyle Meihofer shot a total of 230 (78-76-76) tying for 47th place, while Tyler Gentilella (78-79-76) and Christian Crabill (79-80-77) finished the tournament with a 233 and 236, respectively. Turner Reid, who competed as an individual, concluded the tournament with a three-round score of 243 (91-73-79).
Sam Houston State finished the invitational in first place, shooting a team score of 871 (283-293-295), followed closely by Iowa State with a team total of 872 (296-294-282). USC Upstate (880) and Toledo (889) came in third and fourth after the final day of the tournament. ISU finished the tournament in front of Rutgers, Drake and Bradley.
The Redbirds will have a quick turnaround, as they prepare for the Firestone Invitational Monday, October 6.
