ST. LOUIS – Illinois State's freshman forward Millie Stevens was named the Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week, the league announced Monday. Stevens earned the recognition for her performance in ISU's 81-76 victory over Murray State. It is the first weekly honor for the Redbirds this season.
Stevens had a career night in ISU's first win of the 2015-16 season, as she netted 17 points. Stevens connected on 6-of-9 shots from the field and 5-of-6 from the free throw line. The freshman forward led the team in rebounds, with nine, including six offensive boards. The 17 points and nine rebounds both set career highs. Stevens also recorded an assist in a career-high 33 minutes.
On the season, Stevens is averaging 10.5 points per game. She is just one of three Redbirds averaging double figures through two games. Stevens has connected on 53 percent of her shot attempts and has drained 83 percent of her free throw attempts. She leads the team in rebounds with 6.5 per game.
Lizzy Wendell from Drake was named the Valley Player of the Week for her performances against Wisconsin and North Dakota.
Stevens and the Redbirds are back in action tonight, as they host Illinois-Chicago (Nov. 23) at 7 p.m., before competing in the UTSA Tournament Friday (Nov. 27) and Sunday (Nov. 29) in San Antonio, Texas.
