SAN ANTONIO, Texas – During the Thanksgiving holiday, it is important to realize all that we are thankful for, while giving back. The Illinois State women's basketball team did just that during its holiday trip to San Antonio, Texas, over Thanksgiving break. On Thursday, November 26th, the Redbirds took timeout of their busy schedules to volunteer at The Children's Shelter.
At The Children's Shelter, the Redbirds interacted with the children, ranging from infants to 12-years-old, over the lunch hour. Head coach Barb Smith got the event started with introductions.
Once everyone was introduced, the Redbirds and the students took to the playground. The focus of the outside activities was on the playground equipment. Then, the team and the children took a tour of the facility before having Thanksgiving lunch together. ISU helped serve the food, before joining the children for the meal.
Smith pointed out how important it was for the student-athletes to give back during their Thanksgiving trip.
"Today, we had an amazing time with some beautiful children at The Children's Shelter," Smith said. "Our players, managers and coaching staff played on the jungle gym, as well as several games of tag, before eating Thanksgiving lunch with about 35 children. It was truly a great experience for all of us. God bless all of the people that make each and every day possible for these kids."
The Redbirds play their first game of the UTSA Thanksgiving Classic Friday at 4 p.m., against UTSA.
